Are Humans Really Destroying the Planet, or Are We Overestimating Ourselves?

We often come across the statement, “Humans are destroying the environment.”

But let’s take a moment to break this down.

For humans to destroy the environment, we’d first have to assume that humans are separate from it.

If humans were a part of the environment, wouldn’t we be saying, humans are destroying humans, or the environment is destroying itself, or even water is destroying water?

Why don’t we ever say forests are destroying the environmentanimals are destroying the environment, or that ants are wreaking havoc on the environment?

There could be a few reasons for this:

  • Maybe they’re not destroying anything.
  • Perhaps we believe only humans are capable of such destruction.
  • Or maybe others are contributing too, but we’re the ones taking all the blame.

Whatever the case may be, I believe that even if we tried, humans could never truly destroy the planet or the environment.

We are not above nature, nor is nature a separate entity from us.

This planet gave rise to us. We can’t even create a blade of grass from scratch. And even if humans somehow did destroy the environment, it would only be because nature allowed it to happen—it would be part of nature’s own plan, not ours.

If the planet is to be destroyed, it will happen on its own terms, not because of anything we do. We simply cannot alter the course of this planet's destiny.

P.s. We need to stop giving ourselves so much importance.
